Its story
Construction of the mosque began in 1967, and after a long building process it opened for worship in 1987. Vedat Dalokay's modern design was chosen first, but this project was abandoned and the classical Ottoman-style design by Hüsrev Tayla and Fatin Uluengin was built instead. The central dome is supported by four half domes, and four minarets rise at the corners. Beneath the mosque are a conference hall, a library and a parking garage. Visible from many parts of the city thanks to its location near Kızılay, it is Ankara's best-known religious building.
