Its story
Kalecik Castle is the structure that gives the district its name, built on a strategic hill controlling the crossing points of the Kızılırmak. The castle's first construction is claimed to date back to the Galatian period; it is believed to have served as a garrison in the Roman and Byzantine periods and to have been repaired in later periods. Part of the walls and towers survives and has been made suitable for visiting through landscaping. From the castle there is a wide panorama of Kalecik town, the vineyards and the Kızılırmak valley. Kalecik is also the main growing area of the geographically indicated Kalecik Karası grape.
