Its story
When the castle was first built is not known for certain; it is believed there was a wall on the hill when the Galatians settled in Ankara. In the Roman period, as the city spread beyond the walls, the castle was also repaired; Byzantine emperors rebuilt the outer and inner walls in the 7th and 9th centuries. Reused marble blocks, inscriptions and column fragments stand out in the walls, which were also repaired in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Today the narrow streets of the inner citadel are lined with traditional Ankara houses, small mosques and craft shops. From the Akkale bastion a wide view opens over Ulus, Hacı Bayram and all corners of the city.
