Its story
After Atatürk's death in 1938, an international design competition for the mausoleum was held in 1941, and the design by Emin Onat and Orhan Arda was carried out. Construction began in 1944 and was completed in 1953, and that same year Atatürk's body was moved here from its temporary tomb in the Ethnography Museum. The complex consists of the Road of Lions, lined with lion statues on both sides, the vast Ceremonial Plaza, the Hall of Honor and its towers, and the wooded area called the Peace Park. The Atatürk and War of Independence Museum displays Atatürk's personal belongings, War of Independence panoramas and documents. İsmet İnönü's tomb is also at the edge of the Ceremonial Plaza.
