Sultan Hanı Caravanserai
Sultanhanı, Aksaray
Built by Alâeddin Keykubad I in 1229, one of the largest Seljuk caravanserais in Anatolia, covering about 4,800 m².
Its story
The caravanserai on the Konya–Aksaray road was completed in 1229; its architect was Muhammed bin Havlan of Damascus. With its monumental muqarnas portal, the kiosk mosque rising on four piers in the middle of the courtyard, and its multi-aisled winter hall with a domed lantern, it is one of the most impressive examples of the classic Seljuk caravanserai plan. Sources show that the building was also used defensively like a fortress when necessary. It reopened in 2020 after a restoration that began in 2017; inside are handicraft workshops and a carpet museum. It is on the UNESCO Tentative List together with the Seljuk caravanserais.
