Yılanlı Church
Güzelyurt, Aksaray
A late-9th-century Ihlara church famous for its unusual Last Judgment scene in which sinners are punished by snakes.
Its story
Reached by walking toward Selime after descending the stairs and crossing a bridge to the opposite bank, the church is a cross-plan, barrel-vaulted building dated to the late 9th century. A scene on the west wall depicts four sinful women being attacked by snakes: according to the inscriptions, one is being punished for not nursing her child, one for lying and one for disobedience. The chapel on the north wall contains monks' graves. The church takes its name (Church with Snakes) from this striking scene.
