Güzelyurt Manastır Valley (Monastery Valley)
Güzelyurt, Aksaray
A valley of about 5 km stretching from Güzelyurt to the Yüksek Kilise, lined with more than twenty rock-cut churches and chapels.
Its story
Manastır Valley begins right at the edge of Güzelyurt, formerly Gelveri, and stretches for about 4.5–5.5 km, reaching depths of 60 meters in places. According to tradition, monastic life in the valley dates back to the 3rd–4th centuries. Churches carved into the slopes such as Sivişli, Kalburlu and Kömürlü, monks' cells and rock houses can be explored along the valley. At the end of the path you reach the Yüksek Kilise (High Church) on a rocky hill and a view of Hasandağı. It is one of the Ministry's paid archaeological sites.
