History and archaeology / Mound (höyük)
Acemhöyük
Merkez, Aksaray
A large mound in Yeşilova, one of the important centers of the Assyrian Trade Colonies Period, where two palaces have been uncovered.
Its story
Settlement at Acemhöyük began in the early 3000s BC and reached its peak in the Assyrian Trade Colonies Period between 1950 and 1750 BC, when it also spread to the lower town outside the mound. Many Assyriologists believe this is the center referred to in Assyrian records as Purušhattum/Purušhanda. Excavations uncovered two palaces named Sarıkaya and Hatipler, seal impressions, ivory works and rock crystal vessels; the finds are displayed at the Aksaray Museum and at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. The mound is an active excavation site; visiting conditions should be checked in advance.
