Its story
The castle stands just east of İshak Paşa Palace on a steep rocky ridge called Belleburç. Although it is not known for certain who built it or when, it is attributed to the Urartian period because of its wall sections of neatly cut stone and the rock tombs inside the castle; for this reason it is popularly known as the Urartian Castle. It was repaired and used in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. According to sources, the region came under Ottoman rule in 1514 after periods of Kara Koyunlu, Aq Qoyunlu and Safavid rule. Today the castle is largely in ruins and awaits restoration; nevertheless, the wall remains clinging to the rocks, the rock tombs and the view of the plain from the ridge are impressive. It is toured together with the Eski Bayezid Mosque just below.
