Dokimeion Ancient City and Marble Quarries
İscehisar, Afyonkarahisar
Ancient quarries and city where the purple-veined "pavonazzetto," one of Rome's most valuable marbles, was extracted.
Its story
Dokimeion is a Phrygian city founded by the Macedonians in the Hellenistic period, on the site of today's İscehisar. The city's fame comes from the white marble with purple veins quarried nearby; this stone was highly sought after in Rome and used in imperial buildings. In the Roman period the semi-autonomous city minted bronze coins in the emperor's name. The marble-working tradition continues today; Afyon Marble is registered with a designation of origin.
