Its story
Hersek Lagoon is a shallow body of water on the delta where the Yalakdere reaches the Gulf of İzmit, separated from the sea by coastal dunes. Because the wetland lies on migration routes, it is used as a resting and feeding area by flamingos, herons and many other waterbirds. Hersek Burnu (Cape Hersek) is also known as the site of the city of Helenopolis in the Byzantine period. The dirt roads along the lagoon shore are suitable for birdwatching. Early morning is the most productive time for observation.
