Village and rural life
Hamsiköy
Maçka, Trabzon
A mountain village at the northern foot of Zigana Dağı, a stopping place on the old Silk Road; famous for its rice pudding and dairy products.
Its story
Hamsiköy is at the northern foot of Zigana Dağı (Mount Zigana), on the northern route of the historic Silk Road, 19 km from Maçka, and was historically a stopping place. The settlement, referred to in Byzantine sources as Palaiomatzouka, was formerly called Ciharlı; it took its present name in 1959. It is notable for the streams flowing along the valley, misty mountain slopes, forests covered with rhododendrons, historic mansions and fountains. Kaşar cheese, butter and especially Hamsiköy rice pudding (sütlaç), made with milk from the region's rich meadows, have made the village known throughout the country. It is a suitable stop for a break on the Zigana road.
