Boztepe Viewing Terrace
Ortahisar, Trabzon
A hill known in antiquity as Minthrion, overlooking almost the entire city and the Black Sea; known for its viewing platform and tea gardens.
Its story
Boztepe is the hill rising southeast of the city center, known in antiquity as Minthrion. It is suggested that its name may be related to a temple of Mithras thought to have stood on the hill; it is said that Eugenios, the patron saint of Trabzon, destroyed the statue of Mithras here. The hill has been considered sacred throughout history, and religious buildings such as the Kızlar Monastery were established on its slopes. Today Boztepe is a viewpoint and picnic and tea-garden area from which the city, the harbor and the coastline can be seen panoramically. The viewing platform and promenade get crowded especially at sunset; it is easy to go up from the center by dolmuş (shared minibus).
