Atatürk Mansion (Atatürk Köşkü)
Ortahisar, Trabzon
A Renaissance-influenced mansion in a pine grove on the Soğuksu ridge; in 1937 Atatürk made his decision here to donate his property to the nation.
Its story
The mansion was commissioned as a summer house by the Trabzon banker Konstantin Kabayanidis; construction began in 1890 and was completed in 1912. The four-story building including the basement, built of stone, brick and wood, bears traces of Western Renaissance architecture. In the mansion, transferred in Atatürk's name in 1931, Atatürk stayed during his visit in June 1937, and on the night of 11 June he made his decision here to donate all his property to the Turkish nation. Later arranged as a museum, the mansion displays its sitting room, study and bedrooms with period furnishings. Its garden and pine grove offer a quiet break away from the bustle of the city.
