Rákóczi Museum
Süleymanpaşa, Tekirdağ
A museum in the house where the Hungarian national hero Ferenc Rákóczi II lived in exile from 1720 to 1735.
Its story
Ferenc Rákóczi II led the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs between 1703–1711; after its defeat he lived in exile for many years. At the invitation of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III, he came to Gelibolu in 1717 and, after Edirne and Istanbul, settled in Tekirdağ in 1720, where he remained until his death. The rebuilt 18th-century house was arranged as a museum in 1982 and handed over to Hungary. The rooms display period items and documents from Rákóczi's years in exile; the house is an important place of remembrance for Hungarian visitors.
