Its story
Lake Sarıkum is a slightly saline lagoon about 21 km west of the Sinop city center, beside the village of Sarıkum. It formed when an old bay was cut off behind a coastal sand bar built up by sand carried by the waves. The lake, about 2 km long, is on average 2 meters deep and drains into the sea through a small channel when the water level rises. The lake, dunes, wetland and the surrounding forest are protected as a Nature Conservation Area. It is a suitable area for birdwatching and quiet nature walks.
