Its story
The Atatürk Dam, built on the Euphrates as the main structure of the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP), began to hold water on 13 January 1990. With a surface area of 817 km² and a volume of 48.5 billion m³, the resulting reservoir is Türkiye's third-largest lake; it stretches about 180 km between the provinces of Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakır. The lake's water, carried to the Harran Plain through the Şanlıurfa Tunnels, has transformed the region's agriculture. From the viewing terrace near Bozova, the dam body, the spillway and the lake can be viewed together; the terrace also has the Dam Martyrs' Monument.
