Ziraat Botanical Tea Garden
Merkez, Rize
A historic botanical garden and tea garden overlooking the city, where the first seedlings of Türkiye's tea production were grown; today run by Çaykur.
Its story
The garden was founded in 1924 as a nursery on the slope formerly called Garal Dağı, under the leadership of agricultural engineer Zihni Derin and through the work of gardener Emil Vlakov, brought from Batumi. In the area, identified with the beginning of tea farming in Türkiye, citrus species such as mandarin, lemon, orange and grapefruit, and ornamental plants such as bamboo and mimosa, were grown alongside tea seedlings in the early years. Today the garden, run by Çaykur, has areas on tea growing, a viewing terrace, a children's playground and a bust of Zihni Derin; in the 2022 renovation, walls and fountains of the local black stone were added. Drinking a glass of Rize tea while viewing the city of Rize and the Black Sea coast from the terraces is the classic way to visit.
