Malazgirt Battlefield Historical National Park
Malazgirt, Muş
A historical national park declared in 2018 on the plain where the 1071 Battle of Malazgirt took place, hosting the 26 August commemoration events every year.
Its story
On 26 August 1071 the Seljuk army under Sultan Alparslan and the Byzantine army of Emperor Romanos Diogenes met on the Malazgirt Plain; the battle ended in a Seljuk victory and the capture of the emperor, and is considered a turning point in the history of Anatolia. The battlefield was declared a Historical National Park on 5 February 2018. The site has the 1071-step Fetih Yolu (Conquest Road), a ceremonial area, a namazgâh (open-air prayer area), a masjid, walking and rest areas, and grounds laid out for equestrian sports and wrestling. During the commemoration programs held every year at the end of August, mounted archery, cirit (javelin) and wrestling demonstrations take place; on these days the site is very crowded. It is close to the district center.
