A maar lake with bitter, salty water in a steep-shored volcanic hollow northeast of Meke.
Safety warning
Its story
Acıgöl lies in a hollow formed by an explosion in the volcanic area on the southeastern edge of Karacadağ. The shores of the elliptical lake are very steep; its water is bitter and salty because of magnesium sulfate. Some halophilic bacteria species described for the first time in Türkiye have been identified in the lake. It is at km 8 of the Karapınar–Ereğli road and can be seen on the same trip as Meke Lake; the volcanic landscape is best viewed from the hills at its edge.
