Historic Bedesten Bazaar
Karatay, Konya
Konya's historic bazaar area between Mevlânâ Square and the Kapı Mosque, with coppersmiths', yemeni makers' and spice shops.
Its story
The original bedesten that gave the area its name was commissioned in 1538 by the kazasker (chief military judge) Kadri Çelebi as a nine-domed building, and when it fell into ruin at the end of the 19th century, it was demolished in 1901. The bazaar fabric, however, has continued to live in the same place for centuries; in the streets renewed after the 1867 fire, traces of the guild tradition can still be seen today. Coppersmiths, tinsmiths, makers of yemeni (traditional leather shoes), herbalists and souvenir shops line up side by side in the narrow streets. The Aziziye and Kapı mosques are also within this fabric. It is a suitable stop for seeing Konya's daily commercial life and buying local products.
