Konya Archaeology Museum
Meram, Konya
One of Anatolia's first archaeology museums, founded in 1899; known for its Roman-period sarcophagi and Çatalhöyük finds.
Its story
At the end of the 19th century, works collected from Konya and its surroundings were first stored in the Konya Bedesten; the museum was founded as a branch of the Imperial Museum (Müze-i Hümayun) in the time of Governor Avlonyalı Ferit Paşa. It moved to its present building in 1962. The collection stretches from the Neolithic Age to Byzantium; the Roman sarcophagus carved with the twelve labors of Heracles and the finds from Çatalhöyük are its best-known pieces. On the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's museum page, the museum currently appears closed; be sure to check its status before planning a visit.
