Kocaeli Archaeology and Ethnography Museum
İzmit, Kocaeli
A city museum displaying sculptures and reliefs from ancient Nicomedia alongside local ethnographic artifacts.
Its story
The museum occupies a historic building near the Hunting Lodge. The most striking part of the collection is the painted reliefs and sculptures found in excavations in İzmit, thought to date from the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Coins, sarcophagi and inscriptions from the Bithynian, Roman and Byzantine periods are also displayed. The ethnography section features the costumes and everyday objects of immigrant communities who came to Kocaeli from different regions. It is a good stop for seeing the city's thousands of years of history in one place.
