Its story
The national park was declared on 19 October 2004 to preserve the memory of the Sarıkamış Operation and to safeguard the Scots pine forests that form pure stands at the highest elevation in Türkiye. The area of about 22,500 hectares spreads across the Sarıkamış, Selim and Şenkaya districts, with an average elevation of around 2,300 m. In the operation of December 1914–January 1915, tens of thousands of Ottoman soldiers lost their lives in severe winter conditions; within the park are commemorative sites such as the Allahuekber Tepe, Dikenli Tabya, Soğanlı and Sarıkamış martyrs' memorials. Bears, wolves, lynx and foxes live in the forests; the area is suitable for winter sports, hiking and day picnics.
