Kars Museum
Merkez, Kars
A regional museum displaying archaeological artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Ottoman period collected from the region, especially the Ani excavations, as well as Caucasian ethnography.
Its story
The museum's origins go back to the museum office established in 1959; between 1964 and 1978 the Kümbet Mosque was used as the museum, and its present building in the İstasyon neighborhood opened in 1981. In the archaeology hall of this regional museum, which holds artifacts from Kars, Ardahan, Ağrı and Iğdır, Paleolithic stone tools from Kağızman, Early Bronze Age ceramics, Urartian swords and belts, coins and finds from the Ani excavations are displayed in chronological order. The ethnography section on the mezzanine floor features carpets and kilims, silver Caucasian belts, manuscript Qurans and kitchenware. In the garden, ram- and horse-shaped gravestones from the Akkoyunlu and Karakoyunlu periods can be seen.
