Safety warning
Its story
Kanlı Tabya is one of the redoubts built in the early 19th century to protect the south of the city; it was used in the Russian raid of 1828, the defense of Kars in 1855 and the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877–78. It takes its name (kanlı means bloody) from the battalion soldiers martyred here in a Russian night raid. The restored redoubt opened to visitors as a museum in 2018. The re-creations of an infirmary, operating room and ward, the scene representing the soldiers who froze to death in the Sarıkamış Operation, the soldiers' rawhide sandals (çarık) and the illuminated corridor bearing the names of the martyrs are the most popular sections. More than 54,000 people visited in the first 11 months of 2022.
