Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center
Konak, İzmir
One of the city's main stages, in Güzelyalı, named after the İzmir-born composer Ahmed Adnan Saygun, with a 1,153-seat acoustic concert hall.
Its story
Built by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality on the site of the old trolleybus workshop in Güzelyalı, the building was designed by the architects Tevfik Tozkoparan and Emre Ulaş. The center opened on December 27, 2008, the 100th anniversary of Saygun's birth, with an inaugural concert performing the composer's Yunus Emre Oratorio. The main section has a 1,153-seat concert hall with an orchestra pit on a lift, a second hall seating 243, and exhibition areas. The listed 19th-century buildings on the site have been restored and are used as a café and music library. The Culture Platform in the open area features a 3-meter statue of Saygun by Erkin Erkman.
