Its story
The floor mosaics recovered from the Roman and Byzantine villas of Antakya and its surroundings are the source of the museum's fame. Its new building, opened in two stages in 2014 and 2019, spreads over a large campus on the Antakya–Reyhanlı road. The collection consists of tens of thousands of works from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages; works such as the Late Hittite lion statue from Tayinat were also displayed here. In the earthquakes of 6 February 2023 the building was damaged and the works were moved to storage. After strengthening and renovation work, the museum is targeted to reopen gradually by the end of 2026.
