Its story
Süleymaniye, a few kilometers southwest of today's city center, is popularly known as Old Gümüşhane. According to the TDV Encyclopedia of Islam, in the time of Suleiman the Magnificent the city was moved to this location closer to newly found silver deposits; the construction of a mosque and more than fifty houses around it was ordered, and the neighborhood took its name from this mosque. In the settlement spread over the slope, besides the Sultan Süleyman Han Mosque, minaret remains, old hamams, Greek churches, fountains and mansions are seen together. The silver and gold mines and its location on the Silk Road ensured that the place kept its importance for centuries. Walking through the narrow streets to the mosque, its graveyard and the church remains, together with the view over the Harşit Valley, is a good start for understanding the city's past.
