Its story
The Artabel Lakes Nature Park is within the boundaries of the village of Gülaçar, attached to Torul, in the high part of the Gümüşhane Mountains exceeding 3,000 meters; its highest point is about 3,331 meters. In the area, declared a nature park in 1998, there are five main lakes and more than 15 small glacial lakes; Beşgöller, Karanlık Göl and Karagöller are among them. The lakes are accepted as having formed in the glacial period. Endemic plants, wild animals such as bears, red deer and eagles, and steep glacial valleys make the area one of the important trekking destinations of the Eastern Black Sea. The lakes are reached by long hiking trails starting from the villages; the area is under snow for about six months of the year.
