Its story
The lake, in a valley deeply cutting into an eroded plateau near the Otlukbeli district center, is about 150–160 meters long, 30–50 meters wide and 15–18 meters deep; its elevation is 1,855 meters. The southern end of the lake is closed by a travertine barrier gradually deposited by hot waters rising from faults. Because the springs bring abundant iron and sulfur, red deposits form around it; for this reason local people also call the place Kırmızı Su (Red Water). Because of its unique formation, it is protected as a natural site. Right near the lake is a martyrs' monument erected in memory of the Battle of Otlukbeli of 1473; the two places can be visited together.
