Its story
Maden is a mining town known for thousands of years for its copper deposits. The district's historic government house was built in 1762 in the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa III; it is referred to as Türkiye's oldest civil administration building. The building was used until 1876 as the Palace of the Mine Superintendency (Maden Eminliği), then as a sub-provincial governorship and briefly as a provincial government house, between 1926 and 1987 as the district governorate building, and later as a school. Registered as a first-group cultural property, the mansion reopened in April 2024 after a restoration that began in 2021. The clock tower right beside it was built in 1898 by the district governor (mutasarrıf) Hayri Bey; having lost its eaves, dome and clock over time, the tower was restored faithfully to its original in 2018. It is a good starting point for seeing the historic center of Maden, built on the slopes of a narrow valley.
