Sultan Bayezid II Complex Health Museum
Merkez, Edirne
An award-winning health museum in the hospital of the Bayezid II Complex on the Tunca, telling of treatment through music and the sound of water.
Its story
The Bayezid II Complex was founded in 1488 on the north bank of the Tunca River, with a mosque, a hospital (darüşşifa), a medical madrasa, a soup kitchen and other buildings. The hospital served patients for about four centuries, and in its later period especially the mentally ill. In the hexagonal-plan healing hall, treatment with the sound of water, music and scents is explained through reenactments. Trakya University converted the building into a health museum in 1997; the medical madrasa also presents 15th-century medical education. The museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2004.
