Konuralp Museum
Merkez, Düzce
Düzce's museum, displaying the Orpheus mosaic, a Roman sarcophagus and statues from the ancient city of Prusias ad Hypium, together with the region's ethnography.
Its story
The Konuralp Museum, whose construction began in 1977 to protect the finds of the ancient city of Prusias ad Hypium on which Düzce stands, opened in 1994; it gained directorate status in 2009. The garden displays Roman-period architectural pieces, grave stelae and a large sarcophagus decorated with garlands carried by ox heads, found in 1937. The star of the stone works hall is a floor mosaic of about 45 square meters, unearthed in 1998, with Orpheus playing the lyre at its center; a mosaic showing Achilles and his mother Thetis is also here. A copy of the statue of Tyche found at Konuralp in 1931, the archaeology and coin sections, and an ethnography hall with local objects from the 19th century complete the visit.
