Its story
Efteni Lake is a freshwater lake of tectonic origin at the lowest point of the Düzce Plain, 2 kilometers east of Gölyaka. The Küçük Melen Çayı and the Aksu, Asar and Uğur streams flow into the lake; the combined waters leave the lake as the Büyük Melen Çayı and reach the Black Sea. Shrunk to as little as 25 hectares by drainage canals in the 20th century, the lake was placed under protection in 1992 and expanded again with the dikes built afterwards; it varies between 80 and 150 hectares depending on the season. In 2005 a wildlife development area was established around it. On the lake, which is on a migration route, 175 bird species have been recorded, and in the winter of 2023–2024 a white-tailed eagle was seen for the first time. On the shore there are four observation towers and a fishing pier.
