Kaleiçi Bazaar
Merkezefendi, Denizli
Denizli's oldest settlement core and historic bazaar, which grew up among traces of Seljuk-era walls.
Its story
Kaleiçi is Denizli's first settlement area from the time of the Anatolian Seljuks and is known to have been in use since the 11th century. Most of the walls, made up of an inner and outer castle, have disappeared, though traces of the inner wall can be seen in places. It was the city's commercial heart in the Seljuk, Ladik and Germiyan beylik and Ottoman periods, and still functions as a bazaar today with tradespeople and shops in its narrow streets. Arasta Mosque and its surroundings are among the corners that best reflect the bazaar's historic fabric.
