Piri Reis Museum (Gelibolu)
Gelibolu, Çanakkale
A small museum in a historic tower on Gelibolu harbor about Piri Reis, the great navigator and cartographer raised in the town.
Its story
Gelibolu (Gallipoli) was one of the first Ottoman naval bases and is the hometown of Piri Reis, who drew the famous world map dated 1513. An old stone tower on the harbor front has been arranged as a small museum devoted to Piri Reis's life and cartographic work. Inside, reproductions of the world map and pages from the Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of the Sea) are on display. The fishing harbor and tea gardens around the tower are good for a short break in town.
