Village and rural life
Dereköy (Shinudy)
Gökçeada, Çanakkale
Once the island's largest village, an evocative settlement with hundreds of empty stone houses and its valley.

Its story
Dereköy, formerly called Shinudy, spreads across a valley in the west of the island and was in the past the island's most populous village. When most of the Greek (Rum) population left the island in the second half of the 20th century, hundreds of stone houses were left empty, and today the village is striking for its half-abandoned appearance. Wandering among its stone houses, fountains and churches means bearing witness to the island's recent history. The shore of Laz Koyu, belonging to the village, offers a quiet swim in summer.
