Uluabat Gölü (Lake Uluabat)
Karacabey, Bursa
A shallow, Ramsar-listed freshwater lake with water lilies, fishing villages and rich birdlife.
Its story
Uluabat (Apolyont) Gölü is a large, shallow freshwater lake fed by the Mustafakemalpaşa Çayı (Mustafakemalpaşa Stream). In 1998 it was added to the list of the Ramsar Convention, which protects wetlands of international importance. The lake provides habitat for many bird species such as bitterns, pelicans and cormorants, and water lilies bloom along its shores in summer. Shore villages such as Gölyazı, Eskikaraağaç and Akçapınar keep up the fishing tradition. At sunrise and sunset its calm surface forms an ideal mirror for photographers.
