Tirilye (Zeytinbağı)
Mudanya, Bursa
An old Greek town on the Marmara coast, known for its stone houses, Byzantine churches and olive groves.
Its story
Tirilye, officially Zeytinbağı, is a historic settlement on the Marmara coast west of Mudanya. In the Byzantine period, with its surrounding monasteries, it was an important religious center; until the population exchange of the 1920s it was a town with a large Greek (Rum) population. In its narrow streets you can see stone and timber houses, Taş Mektep (the Stone School), Kemerli Church and Fatih Mosque, a converted church. The surrounding olive groves still shape the town's livelihood with Trilye olives and olive oil. The fish restaurants and pier on the waterfront are a good stop to round off the day.
