Nilüfer Hatun İmaret
İznik, Bursa
A zaviye-imaret built in 1388 in the name of Nilüfer Hatun, mother of Murad I, and used for many years as the İznik Museum.
Its story
The Nilüfer Hatun İmaret was commissioned in 1388 by Sultan Murad I in the name of his mother, Nilüfer Hatun. The domed building with an inverted-T plan served as a zaviye-imaret (hospice and soup kitchen) where food was distributed to travelers and the poor. The five-bay portico on the facade and the alternating brick-and-stone masonry show the features of early Ottoman architecture. For many years the building was used as the İznik Museum, displaying the city's finds from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods and İznik tiles. It stands directly opposite the Yeşil Mosque.
