Its story
Measuring about 8.3 × 7 km, the Nemrut Caldera is Türkiye's largest and one of Europe's largest calderas. The rims of the basin, formed when the mountain's conical summit collapsed inward, rise on average 600 meters above its floor; its highest point is Sivritepe at 2,935 m. The area became a natural monument in 2003 and a Ramsar site in 2013, and by a decision published in the Official Gazette on 19 August 2026, the section of about 4,800 hectares within the boundaries of Tatvan, Ahlat and Güroymak was declared a national park. Inside the caldera are the Nemrut and Ilı lakes, lava flows, obsidian surfaces, hot springs and steam vents; the mountain is also an Important Bird Area. The road from Tatvan descends from this viewpoint on the caldera rim into the basin and to the lakes.
