İhlasiye Madrasa
Merkez, Bitlis
A madrasa that took its present form under Şerefhan V, bey of Bitlis, notable for its corner towers and ornate portal, with tombs of the beys in its garden.
Its story
The present building of the madrasa in the Taş neighborhood dates to 1589, the time of Şerefhan V, the bey of Bitlis also known as the author of the Şerefname; some sources, however, link its origin to an earlier Seljuk building. A drum rises in the middle of the rectangular, flat-roofed building, and there are cylindrical towers at its corners. The portal, set within a pointed-arched niche on the north facade, is the most richly decorated part of the building. In the garden are the tombs of Veli Şemseddin, Ziyaeddin Han I, Şerefhan II and the 'Üç Bacılar' (Three Sisters), belonging to the Şerefhanoğulları family. As the building has been used for culture and tourism services for some time, entry to the interior may depend on office hours; the garden and tombs can easily be seen from outside.
