Its story
Taşhan is a bedesten in the heart of Bayburt's historic bazaar area, near the Ulu Mosque, and is documented in early 17th-century sources. The interior of the square-plan building of cut stone and brick is divided into four sections by pointed arches extending from the central pier to the walls, and each section is covered with a dome; its entrance is pointed-arched and domed. The TDV Encyclopedia of Islam states that in the Ottoman period Bayburt had a bedesten and about 300 shops, and that carpets and prayer rugs were among the important trade goods. After restoration, it was temporarily opened for tarawih prayers in 2012 while the Ulu Mosque was under repair.
