Bayburt Clock Tower
Merkez, Bayburt
An octagonal stone clock tower at the foot of the castle, built in the early years of the Republic by İbrahim Usta from Rize.
Its story
The Bayburt Clock Tower is in the city square, right in front of the castle. According to information on Wikipedia, its foundation was laid on 18 March 1924 and its clock started working on 29 October 1924; its master builder was İbrahim Usta from Rize (Go Türkiye gives the construction year as 1923). It is reported that it was commissioned inspired by the clock towers seen by Bayburt soldiers fighting in different places during the War of Independence, and that it resembles the Çorum Clock Tower. The shaft rising on a circular base is octagonal, and the kiosk on top is square in plan. The tower is the starting point for a visit to the castle and one of the city's best-known symbols.
