Hasankeyf Museum
Hasankeyf, Batman
A museum in the Culture Park in new Hasankeyf displaying about 4,000 artifacts from the Ilısu Dam rescue excavations; an ideal first stop in the area.
Its story
The Hasankeyf Museum opened to visitors in November 2019 in the Culture Park of the new settlement, built about 3 kilometers from the old town that was submerged because of the Ilısu Dam. About 4,000 artifacts, spanning from the Paleolithic to the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Roman, Artuqid and Ottoman periods, found in rescue excavations at mounds in the dam basin and around Batman, Diyarbakır, Mardin and Siirt, are preserved here. Fragments of old Hasankeyf buildings, such as the door and mihrab of the Koç Mosque, and models are also on display; some of the artifacts that had waited in storage for a time were later put on exhibit. As the Archaeopark with the relocated monuments is right next to the museum, it is a good starting point for understanding the history of the area before the castle and boat tour.
