Taksiyarhis Memorial Museum
Ayvalık, Balıkesir
The former Taksiyarhis Church in central Ayvalık, restored and opened as a museum in 2013.
Its story
The Taksiyarhis Church in central Ayvalık takes its name from the archangels Michael and Gabriel. From the late 1920s the building was long used as a Tekel (state monopoly) warehouse and was then abandoned. After restoration by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2012, it opened in 2013 as the Taksiyarhis Memorial Museum, affiliated with the Balıkesir Kuva-yi Milliye Museum. With its carved wooden iconostasis, wall paintings and icons, it is one of the most impressive examples of Ayvalık's Greek Orthodox heritage.
