Bafa Gölü (Lake Bafa) Nature Park
Didim, Aydın
The largest lake in the Aegean Region and a birdwatching site, set against the granite crags of the Beşparmak Mountains.
Its story
Bafa Gölü is a shallow lake that was an arm of the Latmian Gulf in antiquity until it was cut off from the sea by the alluvium of the Büyük Menderes. With a surface area of about 60 km², it is the largest lake in the Aegean Region. The Beşparmak Mountains rising on its northeastern shore, with their granite rocks and Byzantine monasteries, define the lake's silhouette. The lake and its surroundings are protected as a nature park; the reed beds and islets are important for waterbirds such as pelicans and cormorants.
