Safety warning
Its story
The lake lies about 18 km from the Murgul district center, at the foot of the 2600-meter Mount Tiryal. It is a landslide-dammed lake, formed when a mass of earth and rock slid down in a large landslide, creating a natural dam behind which water collected. Its surroundings are covered with spruce and pine forests and, higher up, mountain meadows; red-spotted trout live in the lake. Hunting is prohibited in the area, which is also protected for its wildlife. Quieter than its namesakes in Borçka and Şavşat, Murgul Karagöl is suitable for hiking, photography and nature watching; a visit during the yayla season is recommended.
