Its story
Lake Çıldır is a natural barrier lake formed when a lava flow and a debris fan blocked the valley; with an area of about 120 km² and an elevation of around 1,960 meters, it is one of the region's largest bodies of fresh water. The lake freezes from late November, and the ice can exceed a meter in thickness; fishing, in which villagers break the ice to catch carp, is the best-known winter sight. The lake's largest island is Akçakale Island, near the village of Akçakale on the shore; on the island are remains of an old settlement and a castle, and in summer it is a breeding ground for birds. Because the lake lies on the migration route of species such as the ruddy shelduck (angut) and the Armenian gull (Van Gölü martısı), it is also important for birdwatchers. The Akçakale shore is a good starting point for enjoying the lake views and village life.
